Default shortening

when some recipes call for shortening, is there any way i can replace it with something else and still get the same results?

It's best to know what types of recipes you are referring to. Depending on the recipe, different fats would be better suited than others.

What is it you don't like about shortening? Is it the partially hydrogenated oil or what?

If you have access to a Whole Foods store, they sell a product that is a solid vegetable shortening with none of the bad stuff in it. I have seen it in health food stores as well.
