Default Coffee cake

I always understood that a coffee cake is quite plain apart from maybe some sort of crunchy topping but no creams etc.
Maybe I'm wrong.... qahtan

I get the feeling there is a misunderstanding based on coffee cake (coffee-flavored cake) and coffeecake (cake to eat with coffee) - it sounds like you're talking about the first? And those replying are talking about the second? Can you be more specific piracer? I've never seen coffeecake (the second one) with chocolate cream in it - usually it's got a streusel topping, or raisins, or is yeasted sweet bread wioth cinnamon and raisins, or no cinnamon, but anyway, yeasted. What exactly are you looking for?

Question

Do you mean a cake like this??

http://www.astray.com/recipes/?show=...lavored%20cake

It contains potato, which I understand provides moisture. You could use a buttercream with coffee to flavor the icing.
