Default Help with cutting and frosting a cake!

I would greatly appreciate any advice
Here's my problem: I'm making a round layered cake for a friend's birthday using 2 9" cakes. I need to cut the cakes (as in cut off the raised tops) so that they fit on top of each other. I know that you need to wait until the cake is cool in order to cut it, however this recipe calls for pouring the icing on while the cake is still hot. Anyone with experience have a solution?

thanks!
