Post pro food periodicals

What magazines other than the usual supermarket gourmet, bon app etc do you subscribe to? I've recently stumbled accross new ones to me;epicurean and one called culinary trends. They are so so. Does Food Arts still exist? I lost my subscription when I moved on from a job a couple years ago. It always was a beautiful magazine,if a bit thin at times.

Dale,

I believe I stumbled across the FoodArts website not long ago; I seem to have misplaced the bookmark but will let you know when I've found it.

As far as what magazines do we read? If you want some wacky trivia and some good food basics, try Saveur. Expensive, but I like to treat myself every once in a while.

There are also industry publications that generally are offered for free, like-
Restaurant Business (weekly), Restaurant & Hospitality, Restaurants and Institutions, Food Service Director and Food Service Logistics, to name a few. There are also liquor publications that have a focus on food service like Cheers and Marketwatch, both complimentary to members of the industry.

Jim, how do you go about getting these publications for free? I love to read the publications which you mentioned, but they can be pretty costly, so I usually stop in the library and check them out. Even at the restaurant show here in Chicago I have picked up copies, always with a price tag? More info on this would be appreciated.

Besides FoodArts, I have found very little in the way of "industry" magazines that are geared towards fine dining. Restaurant & Hospitality, Culinary Trends, Restaurant News, etc. all seem to be geared towards more chain and large volume institutional cooking.

Woody, Restaurants and Institutions is published by Cahners and can be reached at www.rimag.com. To be honest with you, I don't know how I got on the 'list' to get the others. However, if you check out most of the industry publications, they generally offer a tear-out card for free subscriptions. As Pete noted, most of the 'big' magazines are geared to chains and multi-units, however, most have interesting insight to new equipment, product development, food safety, personnel issues and the like. Sorry I couldn't be much help, but I think if you poke around the 'net a bit, you might get lucky. All the best~

Jim, thanx for the quick response. I bookmarked the site and will check it periodically...tried to find a site for Food Arts, but came up with nothing. Is that still being published?

FoodArts
pub. by M. Shanken Communications
387 Park Avenue So. 3rd floor
NY, NY 10016

There's a pretty comprehensive list of food service related magazines and e-zines located at the Food Service Professionals Net, web address www.fspronet.com/whatsnew/pubs.html. The NRA publishes a list of trade related publications too.
