I think most japanese don't even own a refrigerator. They live in closet-size appartments and eat out a lot...

They're not going to buy them to eat, they buy this sort of thing as gifts for their friends, family, and business associates. Good melons cost almost that much in Japan already, and are considered ideal gifts.
