We've been working on our backyard for over a year and there's still work to be done. When we purchased our place, the back consisted of green astroturf over a bed of sand. Now we have some plant life and things are beginning to shape up.

Basil
Tarragon
Rosemary
Thyme
Parsley

Tomato plants in pots

Garden box w/radish, beets, carrots, peas, white habanero, chiles, green onion

Fig, meyer lemon, orange & tangerine trees.

before & current

last years beetroot and carrots and garlic planted in december. Still too early for planting out seeds. So the windowsill is full of starter pots. It was below freezing last night. not forgetting the weeds and wurrums

last year, lemon verbena, basil....sweet and thai, rosemary, tarragon, lemon grass

Pansys are the only thing out.....too cold.....it snowed a foot last week.

So, this year I'm going for the above, loads of various flowers including hydrangas, peonies, pansys, gerber daisys, marigolds.....

no veg nor fruit for me, that's what the farmers' markets are for.....maybe rhubarb.....and boy I'd love a gooseberry bush stickers and all.

wow, this really reminds me that living in California makes things a lot easer, we are already into spring here and have 70* weather, i planted my herbs 2 weeks ageo and there doing good, i can understand for the people that live in areas with snow you have to use local farmers market, well good luck with this years crop, i want to go buy some thai basil this week and maybe some teragon if i can find it
