Hi Papa

Although based in England I often travel to the US on business and for pleasure - and for me both are in CT, among other places. I would like to think I can bring a slightly different (European) view to this US based board, but still put it in the a context that appreciates what America is about. We all live in the global village!

Best wishes

HI,
I'm informed by my local Vetinary Surgeon that Foot and Mouth has different strains, like 'flu. Our current outbreak in the U.K. was previously reported in India. The 'first' source in the U.K. was at a pig farm that fed swill to its animals. It seems that this food has to be cooked well before feeding and that this was not done properly?

This morning I heard that the last outbrake of this disease in Canada was due to a tourist briging in Canada some German sausages...

Local tv news in Milwaukee ran a feature that restrateurs expect the price of pork to jump because none will be imported. Those of you who are Saz's fans, they say they are adding a St. Louis rib (isn't that a spare rib?) to their menu, as they expect the price of baby backs to go high enough to price some diners out of the market. Does this mean the end of New Zealand lamb for the duration? It briefly crossed my mind that this is a terrorist action, but then, I'm not much of a subscriber to conspiracy theories.

Islander,

You are right it is easy for diseases to spread quickly these days. I can see how this can cause your problems. Have you thought of what to do?

Iza: I think all we can do is try and be vigilant our movements, visitors, animals and equipment, and hope for the best. Thanks for your concern. I really feel so upset for those farmers having to destroy their herds, it would be devastating.

A week later I still hear that Welsh farmer's voice....

Islander, my prayers are with you, this is like a food plague spreading across the world. I'm opening a Winter Pantry during the off-market season (1x a month Nov-Apr)
I know that meat will fly out the door.
There is legislationon the definition of pastured (if you leave a door open to a huge barn) amazing how large companies are distorting good practices. I found out that we're spending huge monies for water cleanup, instead of preventative practices..???DUH? Sometimes I feel like I'm raving on this thread and I apologize...I hate waste, cruelty, greed, stupidity...these characteristics are prominant now and will only increase if our laws/rules allow them to flourish. It seems our sustainable farmers have been taking care of their property, herds etc...now everyone wants their foods and the big companies are changing the "definitions" to "organic" "pastured" etc...to where the general populace will think they are doing what our little guys do...and they are being ugly and shoving them out of business....
I'm pissed off.

Frightening indeed. Many of my relatives live in England.

I would rather be considered one who 'overreacted' than one with no livestock. I think your plan is good Islander, My prayers are with ya!

How is your herd Islander? Is everyone all right? Every time I heard a new case has been found, I think of you hoping it won’t cross our border.

I am truly gratified to feel the support and caring from everyone that has posted responses regarding this frightening disease. I guess I never realized that people really do care what happens to us "farmers" and "ranchers". It means a great deal to us to feel we are not facing this dreaded disease alone. We have calves arriving tonight and all next week and I cannot imagine how heartbreaking it would be to have a Government Agent arrive to destroy them. I pray they get this disease completely under control so that we can all get on with happier times and enjoy this beautiful Spring. Thank you again to all of you who passed along your kind thoughts and prayers. It does make things easier.

I understand So. America is beginning to vacinate their animals against F/M. Why has the rest of the world resisted vacination?
