Post Oregon Truffles

Just recently I discovered Oregon Black and White Truffles. Apparently they are not the French (Tuber Melanosporum) type but are of a similar nature. Nor are they Chinese hard shelled Truffles (Tuber Himalayanis - or something like that) They are in fact black like the French type but with an outside that is similar to a black powder almost. The fragrance is like a combination of fresh pineapple and French Truffles. The odor is very fragrant I can smell it outside of the airtight bggie. Right now I have it stored in a ziploc bag in Arborio rice. The price is 299.00/lb retail vs. the current going rate of 1100.00/lb for Perigord Truffles. I had a slice of it and it was very similar to the Perigord in taste. But I haven't yet really done a detailed tasting of them. Is anyone familiar with these truffles and if so what are your feelings and judgements.

WELLLLLL, I've not knowingly had Oregon Truffles, I have had French and they are marvelous, I have many friends who use Oregan truffles in FINE restaurants and are ok with it.....they say they are not FRENCH quality BUT $$$$$....so they are being consumed and can't be toooooo off track or these guys wouldn't bother.
SOOOO for what it's worth that's what I've heard.

They are good for some things, but not what I prefer.

Danielle,

You need a truffle pig to find truffles. I guess you will just have to get yourself a little piggy, train it, and just get out there in the woods and find 'em.

They're now training dog to find truffles. Cheaper to keep, easier to train and best of all dogs don't like truffles.

Sisi:

Yeah, yer right. In Frawnce they use both pigs and dogs. I just think it would be funnier for Danielle to have to train a pig. At least if the little bugger couldn't find truffles, you could roast him up.
