Yesterday they just installed the new computers into our operation, and I am a little blown away by the whole setup. From what I understand, now when I call out the orders, everything is going through the computer. At the end of the night, I go to the computer and this thing has kept track of how much steak, chicken, and everything else we have sold. Based on my inventory and our average sales of steak, chicken, etc. for that week day it tells me exactly how much I need to order. Are they going to need us in the future? Man this is wild stuff. What does everyone else think about the computer in the kitchen.

Oh No: Computers, just think in five years there going to take over our kitchens!! Just think now you can focus on what you do best, cooking. I think that its about time that computers have entered our industry in mass, we are only 10 years behind everyone else. I have used computers for a long time (even if its had to be at home)they are not only easier but they can cut down on costly mistakes. I have used them for everything from inventory to ordering to scheduling my staff and it works great, add how much everyone makes and when your done you have your personell cost. Just think every other industry has computers and everyone else still has a job so don't worry about that. Just sit back learn how to use it and enjoy the benifits, if nothing else it can get you home a half hour earlier and you can enjoy yourself. Good luck with the computer, just remember that," it's not the computers fault, it the user!"

Oooooh.....Now you got me going!!! I happen to be one of the younger generation computer geeks. I ABSOLOUTLY think computers should be in the kitchen. Yes, there is always the time tested way of handwriting, but in this day of efficiency and controls...NOTHING is more important in the kitchen (at least the office) than a computer. I have wow'ed my bosses with forms and controls that I produce on my computer. Why not utilize technology to make your job easier and your business more successful? I have battled for years with my bosses and put up with names like "office chef" because I know how to utilize a computer and they dont. I say...WAKE UP AND JOIN TECHNOLOGY!!! (Anyway, that is my two cents).

I agree that computers do belong it the kitchen. The inventory management along is worth the reason, but there are also other opportunities that have yet to be implemented. Online ordering of product, research/alternative ingredient suggestions for those with alergies, tracking the "favorites" of customers... lots of potential there. I welcome this change.

I have recently jumped from the frying pan into the fire...from a cook to a purchasing agent for food and liquor for the hotel I work at. As you have said, we are definitely behind when it comes to computers (in culinary). I would welcome any input that anyone has regarding an inventory program that I can institute to make my life easier. Chef Jim has offered his system, and I thank him, but I am open to all suggestions. Please make my life easier...I actually really miss the kitchen...Thanx in advance!
