Default egg on toast in the UK

hi,

I saw the movie V for Vendetta and saw some1 cooking egg on top of toast. I was curious to what exactly that was and the method of cooking it. THANKS and sorry for the obscure question :]

Was it on top of it? Or was it just in a hole cut in the bread?

I totally pulled a brain fart and forget what that's called.

As for the technique...it's just your basic dry heat cooking, just not as...direct, as a pan.

Default "Toad in the hole"?

Not sure because it seems that every time I access it it's something different.

Is the toast pressed into a little muffin tin or a hole cut into it like the other post asked?

Need more input for this one.

Toad in the hole? Noooo... that's sausages baked in Yorkshire pudding batter.

Egg on toast is basically just that: a slice of hot, buttered toast with a freshly-cooked fried egg placed on top of it.

Add in some sausage and bacon, a dollop of baked beans and some fried mushrooms, wash it down with a nice cup of tea; and you've got the makings of a decent English breakfast...

Jacaranda is correct

"Toad in The Hole" is sausage (or bangers) baked in yorkshire pudding.

"Egg in The Hole" is made by frying a slice of bread (with a hole in it) in bacon fat and dropping a raw egg in the hole. Cover and cook until desired doneness. Transfat? Hey, My uncle lived into his 90's eating fried bread daily.
However, it wouldn't fly on todays menus.

My mother used to make that when I was a kid. Man that was good, I think though that she toasted the bread first and cut a hole in it and then put the toast in a pan with butter and added the egg in the center, covered it and cooked it. Ahh the good old days!

My mother, who made them as a special treat while we were growing up, told us that our father (who died in my first year of life) called them Camel Neck Sandwiches. Where that name came from I will never know. But after we cut the hole in the bread we buttered it before placing it in a hot pan and cracking the egg in the center. Trick was to get the egg completely cooked without overcooking the yolk... took a lot of exprience to accomplish that. Thanks for the memories. I now have a menu feature for family breakfast tomorrow.

In the UK (and in the parts of Canada I've visited) Toad in a Hole is a sausage inside a puff pastry. It's quite good.
I recently spoke to a friend about this thread. She told me her family called the egg/toast concoction a One Eyed Egyptian. Appears that this breakfast entre has many names..... like Graveyard Stew (bits of toast broken up and served swimming in hot milk with butter, sugar and cinnamon)

There are many names fro the dish that is an egg pan friedn with bread that has a hole cut out in the middle.....One Eyed Susan, Toad in a Hole, Bird's Nest, etc.,........just ask any coffee house line cook.
