As Promised, here is the itinerary for our big festival next week. Hope some of you nearby folks can make it! (I'm talking to you Chicago, Minneapolis, Madison, St. Louis, Omaha!)Slow Food Iowa, in conjunction with WSUI/KSUI Public Radio, announce the first culinary festival in Iowa City to celebrate the connection between local farms and local families. "From Field to Family" will run from September 4th through the 7th, 2002. Featured guests include popular radio host and author Lynn Rossetto Kasper from Minnesota Public Radio & PRI; Renowned cookbook author Deborah Madison, and Slow Food USA President Patrick Martins. The four-day event will feature cooking demonstrations, book readings, farm tours, panel discussions, a "Culinary Walk" and a big Gala Dinner made exclusively of Iowa ingredients. Full Schedule: * Weeks leading upto the event, Iowa Talks, a call-in Public Radio Series on WSUI featuring a special farm, food, gardening and/or health program every Thursday for 8 weeks prior to the event. 10 a.m. each Thursday on AM 910 beginning July 18.a Wednesday, September 4th * 4 p.m. Slow Dinner in honor of our guests, a lavish meal at the farm home of local chef and farmer Simone Alvarez - SOLD OUT! * 8 p.m. A Bountiful Harvest with Leslie Loveless, a discussion and presentation of local farm photography as featured in her book A Bountiful Harvest: The Midwest Farm Photographs of Pete Wettach, 1925-1965. Live from Prairie Lights, WSUI's literary program, Shambaugh Auditorium on the University of Iowa campus. Free. Thursday, September 5thursday, September 5 * 6-9 p.m. Culinary Walk showcasing the Best of Local Cuisine at downtown Iowa City restaurants, including Adagio, Atlas World Grill, Café 126, Devotay, Motley Cow, New Pioneer Co-op, and Red Avocado. Deborah Madison and Lynne Rossetto Kasper will participate. $30/person. $10 for students. 3 years and under, free. Call Adagio at 319.339.4811 for your "passport" for the Culinary Walk. Friday, September 6thiday, September 6 * 10 a.m. Lynne Rossetto Kasper, Deborah Madison and Robert Morey, the CheeseGuy from New Pioneer Co-op, discuss local cheeses and provide samples; live music by Robert Morey. Iowa Talks Live from The Java House with Host Ben Kieffer, downtown Iowa City at the Java House. Free. Or, tune to WSUI AM 910. * 1-3 p.m. Farm tours with local growers, including Wilson's Orchard and Fae Ridge Farm. Lynne Rossetto Kasper and Deborah Madison to participate. Free. * 5-7 p.m., Know the Score, a live 2-hour music/literary/cultural commentary public radio program broadcast by KSUI 91.7 FM from the University of Iowa Museum of Art. Lynne Rossetto Kasper to appear. This special version of Know The Score focuses on the sensuality of food. Reception after program. Free. * 6-8 p.m. Beer Tasting and Seminar with Millstream Brewing Company at New Pioneer Co-op, Coralville. Free. Registration required with New Pioneer Co-op, 338-9441. * 8 p.m. Deborah Madison with comments from her latest cookbook, Local Flavors, during Live from Prairie Lights. Clapp Recital Hall on the University of Iowa campus. Free. Reception after program to feature selections from Local Flavors. Saturday, September 7thday, September 7 * 8 a.m.-noon Cooking Demonstrations and Displays at Local Farmers Market, Chauncey Swan Park, Gilbert and Washington Sts., downtown Iowa City. Free. Schedule for cooking demos: 8 a.m. Everybody's Whole Foods 9 a.m. Chefs Derek Roller and Dave Burt, Red Avocado, with Deborah Madison 10 a.m. Chefs Barry Greenberg, John Moloney, Juan Casco and Jennifer Wilkins, IMU Food Services, with Lynne Rossetto Kasper. Sweet Rosemary-Apple Pizza. 11 a.m. Chef Kurt Michael Friese, Adagio/Devotay; Patrick Martins, President, Slow Food USA. Niman Ranch Pork. * 12:30 p.m. From Field to Family: A Panel Discussion and Sampling with Deborah Madison, Lynne Rossetto Kasper, local farmer Jon Fogarty and Patrick Martins, President, Slow Food USA. Moderated by local chef Kurt Michael Friese. Our panelists explore the politics of food and how we eat. Reception and food sampling after discussion. New Pioneer Co-op, Coralville. | Hey Kurt, What a fantastic event, and I see your doing a boatload of work with your restaurants and seminars. Truly great to see these types of programs and such positive support from the community. I wish I could come out west and take part in this program, but it will be in my thoughts. Keep us posted on the outcome!
