Post Cocoa Butter

How long does this stuff last?

I've read that this gets rancid.

Can anyone share their thoughts about this subject. Thanks..

YES COCOA BUTTER CAN AND DOES GO RANCID. IT IS AN OIL AND OILS ARE SUBJECT TO RANCIDITY WHEN EXPOSED TO LIGHT, AIR AND AGE. USE IT QUICKLY USE IT OFTEN AND KEEP IT PROTECTED, IN THE DARK AND COOL. IF YOU WANT A MOR SCIENTIFIC ANSWER WAIT TILL I GET HOME (HEY THAT SOUNDS LIKE MY DAD, "JUST WAIT UNTIL I GET HOME......)

If you can keep it in a cool, dry, dark place well wrapped it will last for several months to a year. Always smell before use as it tends to pick up forgein odors etc.
I don't know that a pure cocoa butter will go rancid, if it is very pure and kept well, it should be fine. unless it's unrefined or has milk solids added for some reason.

Feh, I'm so embarrassed. m brown is right. I was thinking more of white chocolate than cocoa butter. Cocoa butter can in fact turn rancid but it will most likely be used long before it would have gone rancid. Kept like you said pure cocoa butter will keep indefinately. Theres more of a chance of picking up foreign odors than going bad. White Chocolate though like I was thinking is a different story.

I learned something new... thanks! I always thought cocoa butter could turn rancid, too.

M Brown,

Thanks for your reply.

Question?

I have, 30 oz. Beurre De Cacao "Cocoa Butter"
from Cacao Barry. I bought it about a year ago, or maybe more. What your saying is, if it is pure cocoa butter I can still use it? Still smells good. Hate to toss out a good amount. It was stored properly.
Thanks everyone too.

If it smells good, taste it. If it doesn't taste bad, it's good! Didja get that?
