The Heirloom Recipe Project on PBS

Hi Gale,

I've noticed that you have an upcoming show that's still in production. It's called The Heirloom Recipe Project and will air on PBS. Being a huge PBS and over the air broadcast fan (sorry all you cable/sat people) I'm really looking forward to your new show. But I can't seem to find any info at all...anywhere.

Could you give us a description of what the show is about and what direction you would like to go with it? Any idea when it will be broadcast?

The Heirloom Recipe Project is something I've been working on with a Chicago Production company (which means I don't have to go to New York and leave my family to make TV shows!). We have a pilot and a robust website ready to be launched and are just finishing up sercuring funding for it (fingers crossed). The plan is to film over the summer for an Oct air date but these things are not always on time...so be patient, but look for it in the fall. It's a show where I help grand parents teach grand children a family heirloom recipe or two to help preserve them before they get lost and disappear. Each week will be a different ethnic backround.

That's a fantastic idea. So many families are disconnected and what a wonderful opportunity to inspire other families to meet up with Grandma and learn some of her recipes together.

It really seems to strike a cord with a lot of people. Some because it's too late for them and recipes have already been lost, unfortunately.

This sounds like it will be a great show. Many of the GM's hold on to those receipes because "nobody make it like my GM". Can you comment on how you get them to break loose and share that special receipe?

The value of this effort is inestimable! Having just lost my mom and inherited her recipe file and cookbooks, I know how important this is. It's like having her beside me in kitchen. Fortunately, she also copied several recipes of my grandmother's, so she can be there too.

This part especially tugs at a string. If you watch TV cooking shows it's easy to get the impression that Italian is the only ethnic cuisine in the world.

Is it premature to ask what ethnic backgrounds you'll be exploring?

We don't have the complete list yet but certainly Italy will get one show. There will also be shows that focus on Hungary, Russia, and Japan to name a few. Two of the shows will be unique in that one will focus on an African American family from New Orleans and the other on a Spanish Family. I think we are also doing one on Persian cooking.

There will be 13 shows for the first season so 13 different countries.

Very nice, it's a shame when those recipes get lost. So much time and effort put into creating them. OTOH, it does give us a blank slate to start from...
