Default It's the age old cooking story.

Hi everyone,

My mom used to have a recipe for Hot Cross Buns that she clipped out of Edith Adams cooking section in The Vancouver Sun, sometime in the 1960s. The thing that was different about this recipe from all other Hot Cross Bun recipes I've seen is that one of the ingredients was potatoes. They were probably the best Hot Cross Buns I've ever tasted.

Well, it's the age old cooking story. One day a friend of hers came over and wanted to borrow the recipe. The friend was in such a hurry that she couldn't wait for my mother to write the recipe out for her so my mother gave her the newspaper clipping. That was the last time she ever saw the recipe - not only did the friend not return the recipe, she didn't even remember ever borrowing the thing!

I'm just wondering if anyone here might just have a recipe for Hot Cross Buns with potatoes as one of its ingredients?

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Cathy

Cathy,
I don't want to date myself, but in the early sixties there were a lot of recipes using the new age potato flakes. I'm just wondering if it could have been flakes instead of potatoes.
Welcome

Mezzaluna,

Thank-you for the welcome.

phatch,

It just might be, seeing as the source is a Vancouver one. I'll have to print it out and see if it rings a bell with my mother. Thanks for the link!

panini,

No problem with dating yourself, I'm 44 myself. You might be correct, but I never actually saw the recipe for myself, it was "lost" by the time I was 10 years old. I just remember them tasting a whole lot better than any other Hot Cross Buns I had tasted to that point. Since then, all the other recipes my mother and I have tried have been a bit disappointing. And the boughten ones with that weird elasticy "frosting" are just strange.

By the way phatch,

I've Googled till I was blue in the face and not come up with that webpage. What did you put in the search bar?
