My husband and I are taking a trip to Washington DC and Baltimore...we are going with kids so, can anyone recommend some good family friendly resturants? Also, any sight seeing tips would be welcome!!!

Hi onesockchef,

December of 1999 our older daughter Amy (10)and her dance company opened the pagent of peace across from the white house on the elispe. She danced for the Prez..then Clinton. It was a great time and it was the first time my wife and I we're in washington since we where kids. I can't tell you how wonderful the city was...the Korean and vietnam memorials where very moving as was the roosevelt. We went to tour the capital, toured the white house,Lincoln and jefferson memorials. We went to a hard rock cafe (yuck) but the kids enjoyed it. Becca just reminded me she got a really big penny at the lincoln memorial. The buildings and history were fantastic and all of us left with a real sence of pride.I am not a political type but you can't help the feeling. The memorials are very sobering. When I was a kid a remember going to the US mint and the FBI builing.
Have fun and let us know how it goes.
PS..I hope the little one keeps his sock on

You have to do the aquarium in Baltimore and the zoo in DC unless you have easy access to one nearby. I've been to a great number of aquariums and Baltimore is my favourite; I used to do some of my best studying there! Lexingtom Market can be an eye-opening experience for those interested in the culinary shopping aspect. Fells Point Baltimore's Little Italy has some wonderful restaurants all of which seemed to do incredible Veal Saltimbocca (not nec. too kid-oriented), if you are into desserts, we used to share some huge eclairs from Vaccaro's (kid-friendly).

In DC across from the zoo on Connecticut Ave., there is the zoo bar. Regular bar food (burgers, sandwiches, etc) but when I was kid-sitting (from 3 different families) everyone's choice was always the Zoo Bar! During the day it is always kid-friendly. Get it to go and hit the Jazz at the zoo in the evenings(metro-red line Woodley ).

Not necessarily special or unique to DC, but the other kid-friendly and favourite was Mongolian BBQ in Bethesda (metro-accessible; red-line to Bethesda).

The Holocaust Museum changes it's children's tour, but it is usually very good and powerful. The first time I went, the exihibit called "Daniel's Story" was there. Very moving and powerful. Well worth the wait.

Air and Space is always a hit with kids.

Have fun! When are you heading up there?

I'm from Annapolis, Md but frequent DC for some great dining experience. For fine dining try The Inn at Little Washington, for awesome Morrocan and a favorite celeb hangout, try Makaresh, very hard to find but it's off of New York Ave on a corner lot it's an orange building with no sign; for tapas a favorite is Coco Loco's. These are just a few off the top of my head. Have fun. If you want to taste the absolutely best crab cakes on earth and can travel a little let me know.

Heading to Williamsburg and the DC area in a few months...I'd love to know where the best crabcakes are that you were talking about in your post. Thanks!
