Default Italian in Puerto Rico

Went to Puerto Rico recently on a business trip. Never been there before and stayed in Dorado. Got to tell you about Mangere Italiano Restaurant. Very outstanding, great wine selection (had two different Cabernets from Chile) on two different nights. Had the finest Italian dish I've ever eaten called Penne alla Mastriciano.

Had it both nights, met the chef, got the recipe, got hugs from most of the staff, and was shown two of the wine steward's favorite wines. I can't find my notes but one was from Spain and the other Australian.

Doc,

I'm headed there on Tuesday. What did you find by way of local, authentic stuff? Also, does anyone there make rum besides Bacardi?

Yes, you must try the Don Q Cristal or Don Q Limon (has lime in it already). The most outstanding of Puerto Rican rums, I hear tell it is only available in one location in the states. I picked up two bottles at the Duty Free store on the way back. Didn't last long. Next time, I take fewer clothes to make more room for more Don Q!

Didn't eat anywhere for local stuff. Puerto Rican food is very bland in general. Plantains (green and yellow) in almost everything! Rice and beans everywhere you go. WhATEVER you do, don't eat in a restaurant called Oregano. Worst Italian food I ever had. Couldn't believe the prices were skyhigh. There is also an Argentinian Steakhouse right next to Mangere Italian restaurant in Dorado that was highly recommended to me. In San Juan, there is a restaurant that people raved about which I beleive was "authentic" called Su Casa or maybe it was Mi Casa. San Juan is supposed to have a whole lot more good restaurants than Dorado.

There was a small cafe on the corner of the road leading to the Guidant plant in Dorado that everyone said was real authentic PR food, but the menu is all in Spanish, y mi español no esta muy bien!

Default CLosed Down

I can't believe it! Mangere Italian Restaurant in Dorado is closed down! Some of my work buddies are there in Puerto Rico this week and they all went based on my recommendation. When they got there it was closed down.

How lucky can I get that I would be there just months before they close forever to get a recipe for one of the best Italian dishes I ever ate?

Amazing....ah, memories....
