Default What's the most unique/unusual restauant you ever visited?

It could be an unusual theme, an unusual menu offered, a unique menu card, weirdly located, outrageously designed/decorated, or even an unusual practice - do post here ! I'd love to hear as much as i can from memebers all over the globe.

for eg i've heard that in the the Maldives there is a full fledged underwater seafood restauarnt WOW !

One which stands out was a Turkish restaurant I went to for my sister's Hen's night. No chairs, we all sat on huge stacks of beautifully decorated cushions on the floor around a low communal table, on which was served an endless array of Turkish food - many of which no-one knew what they were and the food just kept on coming...and the sweets were so sweet! and the coffee thick as syrup and twice as sweet. Belly dancers circulated the restaurant on an hourly basis, the air was thick with incense. What a memorable night!

Only trouble was - I was 8 months pregnant and wearing a pencil skirt - once I got down on the cushions I stayed there the entire night - she could have told me!!!! Hehe but it was still good.

Thumbs up

For me it was Alinea in Chicago, hands down. Chef Grant Achatz combines high-tech with high flavor and a sense of humor. Alinea Restaurant

I wrote a review of the dinner with my husband, Nicko and his wife, Colleen: An Evening at Alinea

On related note, I hope Chef Achatz is recovering from his bout with cancer.

Default Afghan

I really enjoyed my Afghan dining experience. Like the Turkish restaurant mentioned above seating was on the floor. We ordered some kind of sampler meal which meant that we got try about 1/2 a dozen or so Afghan dishes. All the dishes were quite tasty!

When we visited Lanzarote - one of the Canary Islands we went to a restaurant on top of their 'live' volcano and it is still very very hot! The 'El Diablo' restaurant serves Canarian food which is cooked using geothermal heat (A cast-iron grill placed over a large hole in the ground using the heat from the volcano) They cook their potatoes in sea water and the food was fantastic!!

I went to a restaurant out in the country in Oak Ridge, OR, called the Sportsman's Cafe. There was a bug lamp INSIDE the dining area. Every once in a while I heard a loud ZAP. Talk about atmosphere . . . Needless to say we didn't sit at the table that was under the bug lamp I don't remember what the food was like--it wasn't as memorable as waiting for the next insect to get electrocuted.

I've eaten at the Opera House in Sydney and the Centrepoint Tower with its revolving restaurant..again in Sydney.

One of the most beautiful restaurants (in terms of old world charm) I ate at was in Paris at one of the museums there. I think it was the Musee D'Orsay.
