Default Hi everyone from a newbie in DC

So I finally found this place after a long while of driving my non-chef friends crazy with work talk. I've been lurking on the forums for a few days and I'm glad to finally be able to post - you guys are such a great outlet! I'm a six-year veteran of the line cook lifestyle, recently relocated to Washington, DC from South Louisiana. Currently I'm working garde manger at a four-star french fusion place that thinks it serves Southern food (I've since learned to stop correcting their pronunciations and misguided ideas about what Southern food really is ) Anyway, hi, I'm Katie, nice to meet all of you ... can't wait to get into it!

Y'all are welcome here, I guarantee! As if cooking on the line weren't enough, what else keeps you busy?

We're looking forward to hearing from you Katie!

Regards,
Mezzaluna

Default it's what keeps me NOT busy!

heheh.... yeah, kitchen work keeps me pretty much swamped, but when I'm not cooking, I'm a working musician. i play piano, guitar, a little bass, and i sing and write music. DC has a lot of new opportunities for me in that area, so i'm looking forward to getting involved with the music community here as well. so if i'm not cooking or jamming, i try to sleep some! anyway, thanks for welcoming me ... you folks seem like a great bunch.

Thumbs up

Kuan is a chef/musician too! Too bad he lives in the Twin Cities. There are certainly more. Dive into this site and see if any are in your area. Maybe you can get a jam together.

hey, I don't check the welcome forum enough, musta missed this post!

Welcome to the board, and the area! I'm not a professional cook(unfortunately, I'm in I/T), but I do love to cook, especially when throwing big parties and catering them myself.

Anyhow, I do love some good music. I used to work at DC's last independant music store(DCCD). If you're looking for fun spots to hang for tunes, I recommend:

Black Cat(saw the Shins on Tuesday and got to hang out for a bit)
930 Club
Velvet Lounge
Cafe U-Topia
Warehouse Next Door
Juste Lounge
Galaxy Hut
Pharmacy Bar

and of course, if you're just looking for good food, you can't walk around Bethesda without bumping into good restaraunts. But I also recommend Jaleo and Zatinya(of course) as well as weekend brunches at Gabriels.

anyhow, if you have any questions 'bout DC, feel free to ask away.
