Hey Tim if you are near Madison check out the farmer's market and see if they need help with their cooking demonstrations....just volunteer and assist the chefs on Sat. Most markets pull in great local chefs to cook local produce, great way to meet chefs and certainly a super way to meet farmers....eventually your suppliers.
Try L'Etoile in madison....Odessa Piper is the owner/chef and buys from many local farmers. She would be a good one to call to volunteer for foodie activities.
