Default saludos from Mexico City

My name is Karen, I'm a Minnesotan living in Mexico City, born in Chicago, and recently I decided to get into cooking more seriously and took a 6-month class on cakes and the like (repostería) at a small cooking school called Maricu here in Mexico City.

I've really enjoyed it, and am even selling a few things...so I'm not doing all that bad and having a bit of fun too. My favorite happens to be a Guava cheesecake mousse...mmm.

I'd like to take a longer one on sweet and salty perhpas next year.

I hope to learn a lot here from those who know, and make some new friends.

cheers from the south, Karen

Saludos, Karen and welcome to Chef Talk! I hope you'll visit often to share your expertise and your experiences with cooking in Mexico. If you can, I'll bet there'll be others wanting to learn more about that guava cheesecake mousse, too.

Do you shop in markets in Mexico City? What have you discovered and learned from that experience? I've seen some of Rick Bayless's shows in which he visits markets in Mexico and shows viewers products and foods from various regions. I'd love to hear what you can share, too. (By the way, Rick Bayless was "here" at Chef Talk for a week-long conversation. You can visit the Special Guest archives and read the questions and answers from that visit.)

I hope we see you as often as your busy schedule allows. Please enjoy exploring all the stops on this board and participate, too!

Welcome!
Mezzaluna

Hi Mezzaluna,

thanks for the welcome.

I almost always buy fruits and vegetables at an outdoor market near my house, cheaper and fresher. Going to markets is a good practice in general, because you find things you can't at the store.

I'll start exploring here...

cheers, Karen
