Default High Schooler to Culinary School

If you have a true interest and passion in cooking, culinary school will be a blast for you. You'll learn so much about the science behind food, as well as the art of flavor combinations.

It will be hard work, though. And, you'll only get out of it what you put in. Try to have a goal in mind before you begin, and pursue a specific field. Whether you'd like to work in a fine dining restaurant, a hotel, university, hospital, business dining, personal chef, caterer...they will all have different skill sets to absorb.

You'll probably be on your feet all day long, lifting heavy and hot items, in a hot kitchen.

My advice would be to take as much math and science in high school as you can to prepare for culinary school. There's a lot of math needed to scale recipes, figure cooking yields and trim loss, and especially important, how to figure profit and loss on what you prepare.

You're pursuing a noble career that can take you all over the world if you'd like. Make the most of the opportunity while you can. Before you know it, you'll be working constantly. Enjoy school now, it will benefit you the rest of your life.

If I can answer any specific questions, I'd be glad to.
