This is a superior all around book.  This was the first cookbook I ever really used faithfully.  There are general cooking techniques and recipes that make this a superior beginners book as well as a fine edition to any accomplished cooks book shelf.   Definately a must have in my opinion.

The attributes include such things as must have essentials for your pantry, and cookware. The index is easy to use as there are cross references to help even the most inexperienced cook find what they are looking for.

The recipe section includes things from the everyday such as meatloaf and banana bread to the more elegant fare such as German Caraway Bread or Brains with Brown Butter.  There are , in my well worn 1979 edition, even recipes for many wild game animals too.  I hope they have not reduced those in later editions.

In short, this book is one of the best newlywed or housewarming gifts you can give a young up and comming home chef, or future chef at the most posh restraunt.  After all, good beginnings are where it all starts and this book is a good beginning.  I still, after 40 odd years of cooking ,refer to its pages often.
