The good , the bad , and the ugly!

If you have been in this biz for any length of time then you have seen all of the good , bad and ugly things that customers can bring to our establishments . In our lives and work we depend on other people to pay our bills , but sometimes the situation arrises
where we must take controll . Of course serving strong beverages can induce this behavior greatly . The good we give our best to , the bad we try to controll , the ugly we 86 . Still we need all of the biz we can get so we always have this mix .
How do you deal with this mix to keep your place running smoothly ? Yesterday I had a customer complain loudly that the meatloaf sandwich he was served was horrible and nothing like his mother used to make ( he was very drunk ) . I then took the plate from his table and told him if he wanted to eat his mothers meatloaf he should have went to her house instead of coming to our restaurant and that I would not charge him for his meal and that his presence was no longer required ! He tried to get loud but I told him to please leave and escorted him to the door
( been a bouncer for a long time ) and the scene was over . All of the other customers were very happy with the telling of this man to move on .
So what have you had to deal with lately ?

On a roll.

My customers have been real pussycats lately. Its' 1am, and I just walked in the door. I have catered 5 functions in the last 3 days (along with the restaurant being open)and have to get up in 4 hours to cook brunch. Man, am I lucky! If I have to work too much and end up burned out and totally wasted at least the people were good about it! And the food and service were great.....

Well, the customers that I've dealt with lately have been ingrates. One woman caused a scene because her steak was undrcooked (server typed in the wrong doneness). We told her that we would cook a new steak for her and comp her meal as well as her husband's dinner. The steak was perfectly done, but when we sent it out, she threw a hissy fit and proclaimed that this second steak was even worse than the first one!! So she therefore proceeded to complain loudly enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear, and then walked out saying she would never eat there again. Did she think that we wanted her back?:p

At the run of the mill family restaurant I work at, someone sent back a French onion soup saying it was cold. Now, the FOS comes from a hot batch, is topped with croutons, cheese and spices (shhh its a secret, ok not really), and is put under the salamander to melt. It then goes out immediately. How does it get cold? :( Oh well...

It gets cold if you sit and talk with your dining companion (or on your cell phone) while the meal cools.

I felt awful this weekend when we ate at Roy's in Baltimore, and moved twice before the drink order was taken. My SIL didn't like the noisy people at the next table; then the second table was tippy; finally we came to rest at the third spot. The first move resulted in the need for a completely fresh set-up.

I made sure we tipped well.

This past Saturday an atty parked in the market area....now we have !/2 block, blocked off with barrels and a sign that says the street is closed, the police bag the meters so it's illegal to park and the bags say you'll be towed. So this guy comes through the opening that a farmer leaves while pulling out and parks in a bagged spot. Now at 12:15 we are busy tearing down the tents, tables, unbrellas, loading up the remainders of market and cleaning up.....it is a caotic time and I don't want anyone to dodge cars as we're doing it.
This guy, gets out of his car, I flag him down and say the street is closed and he chews into me...."I'm an atty representing a restaurant on this street and your done with it now, you have a charter from the city and I'll have it revoked, right now I'm going to have lunch and if I'm disturbed or my car is disturbed I'll sue you and close this place down...." UNREAL, I was blasted it totally trashed my day, I called the police who ticketed him and then went to talk to him, I didn't hear about it afterward and I'm really curious as to what he said. I went and bought a camera and took pictures of blank parking spots with the Sat. paper and had the photo shop mark um so that the time was on the envelop. What a jerk!!!!
Meanwhile I know there are judges, attys, VIPs that shop the market and would be trully distressed to see it disappear.
Not into vengence but thought about letting them know that this guy is threatening us and making it difficult to run the market.
