Thought some of you would enjoy this read from The Smithsonian Magazine. Bring to mind any similar experiences?

Scary stuff,

Please teach and back your ideas, a melon is a melon is a melon, except if it's rang up as celery.

I recieved a copy of it from a dear friend this past week....it is systemic! if ignoranceweren't so prolific it would be funny. I'm teaching a 4th grade class tomorrow peach (frozen from last Summer) and sweeten chevre in fillo dough. I'm working on various consulting projects that are teaching children how to know what is local and seasonal...."NOT EVERY TOMATO IS THE SAME" There will be a generation that is in the black hole of food preparation....what was going to be pretty easy and quick has become extended.

I've encountered the same! However, I can report a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

Last week a young checker asked me, "Is this Italian parsley or cilantro?" You could have knocked me over with a feather.

Mezzaluna,

Actually, at least that was an educated question. Sometimes it's hard to tell, especially when they're in the plastic bags and you can't smell them.

We've has perplexed looks followed by "...what is this?" for artichokes, tomatillos, jalapenos, serranos, endive, nappa cabbage, bok choy, asparagus...

shroomgirl,

How exciting! May have to get those kids to teach their parents! LOL!

the other day the cashier had to ask me what was in the clear plastic bag - it was pistachios!!!!!!! perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel is further off....

Any trip to the supermarket for me is usually a produce lesson for the young, young, very young cashier. Sometimes the older ones don't know what things are either. (Endive is a favorite of mine...I make them squirm until I can't stand it anymore, then tell them what it is.)
