Union Square Green market

Was their last Wednesday,

In abundance, Heirloom tomatoes, Sun golds, yellow and red brandy wines, purple Cherokees, zebras all excellent. Eckerson hills had the best ones.Beautiful little fraise bois, sweet and very aromatic. Crisp radishes (icicle, easter and the like) Jams jellies and perserves and Rick picks pickles where auesome. Many organic summer squashes and tender lettuces. Anyway, if your in an area with a farmers market, they are in full bloom and you should check them out.

what a great market. i have fond memories of that market from when i lived in nyc. i used to live right down the street and would visit it on most saturdays. your post brings back alot of good memories.

now i'm in San Francisco, and out local farmers market leaves nothing to be desired. it's got everything. and all organic. everything from asparagus to zuchinni, and much like the union square market, it is high season at the market. i agree, now is the time to get out and pay a visit to the local farmers markets in your area and meet the folk who are growing your food.

We're in the height of peach/necterine, blackberry, corn and tomato season.
The list I send to the paper each week reads something like.....
tomatoes, potatoes (including fingerlings), cabbages, squash (summer/winter), onions, herbs, watermelon, other melons, fresh chicken, bison, chevre, farm eggs, raw milk, lamb, beef, peaches, blackberries, eggplant, swiss chard, kale, corn, huit la coche, flowers, shiitakes, chanterelles, lettuces, spicy greens, kholrabi, peppers, chilis, pimentos, apples are coming on....Now is the time to be cooking!

I've made blackberry jam, peach chutney and am working on ketchup tomorrow. Trying to preserve for the winter......looking at pickled okra, cukes, green tomatoes.....finding garlic/potatoes, dried beans.....

Shroomgirl, do you know if anyone out in Clayton market has Purple potatos? I know world market in Kirkwood has them sometimes, but I need to get to your Clayton Farmer's market this week, if possible.

yep lots of potatoes including blue and purple.

I've had several parents from NY come through the market this past week as they are dropping off their kids at Wash U. Interesting conversations, it seems there are not alot of markets north of NYC but alot of farm stands.
We chat about Union SQ Market....they think Clayton is "cute". I guess 30 stalls is not close to the hundred or so around the square....but we have Great ambiance with tables on the sidewalk and omelets with market products in them, baked goods, cheese, meats (chicken, lamb, beef, bison), veg, fruits, preserves, fresh pastas, sometimes shrooms....well rounded and in just 1/2 a city blk. Apples are on the market....we're waiting for cider and pecans.

Sept 3 is Cooking with Kids, I'll have demos that are kid friendly all morning, give aways, a characture artist drawing kids with veg/fruit, drawing tables for paper tops to the "Art ala Carte" dining tables. Possibly a talk to a farmer
booth, so they get farm stories....it'll be a blast!

I've got the next Sat off and need to visit markets then....last year it was Madison, WS. I've been to Ca. within the year, New Orleans....Santa Fe,
it's always interesting visiting other markets around the country.
