From Home Kitchen Cooking to the Big Time!

Hello. After many years of my family members pushing for me to sell my cookies and cakes in markets, I've finally decided to do it! I love cooking and I love people enjoying my cooking, so I thought why not...

It was overwhelming at first. I didn't know how to start. I have a rather large kitchen, so I knew I could make my treats in bulk. Next, I needed some sort of plastic container to house my treats that could be found on market shelves. I found a great company (www.ppck.com) out in California to help with it. They manufacture plastic food containers and typically sell in huge quantities. But, they were able to accomodate my small orders. Any how, I am currently in the process of trying to introduce my product to different markets. Can anyone help me on strategies to introduce my product to markets like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, etc.? Not really sure how to approach them...

Thanks for reading my story! I hope I can get some good tips...

Welcome, Chef Mama. I'm sure others will jump in with more information for you, but here are a few notes:
  1. Check with your local and state health and/or agriculture and/or market regulating agencies; you may not be allowed to sell food prepared in your home kitchen, but only food made in a licensed, inspected facility.
  2. Before any market will take your product, you may have to show that you have liability insurance, and that you produce in a licensed facility (see above).
  3. Even if you are allowed to sell product made in your home kitchen, make sure you follow all the rules and precepts of good sanitation.

There's a lot more for you to consider before you start looking for outlets, but this is a start.

PS: If you are in the New York City area, PM me and I will put you in touch with a group I'm in that works with start-ups like you (for free!).
