angel food cake help

I'm a new wife.
Tried to make an angel food cake yesterday from a recipe.
Box confetti cake mix, added in 1 T orange peel zest (dried), drained liquid from 15 oz. mandarin orange can and added enough water to make 1.25 cups of water. Mixed, baked 425 for 45 min....looked brown and cracked on top. Inverted on a bottle and it came out all over. What did I do wrong?

Having never made a cake mix/ angel food I really don't know, but knowing that angel cake is very light does the recipe say to add stuff to it. I would have thought that would have been too heavy for it...

I don't understand "came out all over"??? Does that mean the cake fell apart or what? How did you prepare the tube pan for baking the cake? Was the cake set in the middle? That is, did you test it with a cake tester to make sure it was done all the way through? Did you run a thin bladed knife around the cake tin to loosen it from the sides before inverting it?
