So... What are your favorite cooking Seasons and why?

Actually I find each of the four Seasons enjoyable(except maybe the middle of winter) and that each brings items to the table that are uniquely seen during those times. Spring, with it's fresh awakening of items moving from the heavier to the lighter. Summer with much lighter meals, more grilling/smoking and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Fall seeing the final havests of all the summers efforts with meals starting to take on a more "comfort" feeling. Pumpkins, apples harvested, more varieties of squash available and final smoking of meats for the year and preserving foods to prepare for the winter Then there's the beginning of the Holidays. Last is Winter. Well this seems to be the long haul season since the "best" Holidays actually occur during fall and the first weeks of winter.

So for me Fall is my favorite season. Don't get me wrong, I love all the "new" things of Spring, Summers grilling/smoking, Margaritas on the deck etc. It's just that Fall seems to be the time to showcase my passion for foods. The cooler days make for the enjoyment of more "comfort foods" like Meatloaf, stews, soups, roasts, fresh baked breads, desserts, pastries, and some of the items from my training. Also for me there's less repetition in items.

There is a cooler season in each of the continents plus just think of all the European countries and their cuisines that have a Fall season. Plus there's the challenge of keeping them on the healthy side with-out loosing character or taste. And we/I took up canning to stock the cabinets and store room with items. Granted it's a chore but... allot of fun too. Especially since my wife came up with the idea of presenting some of my items to family and friends as gifts for the Holidays. And then there are the Holidays. From Thanksgiving turkey thru New Years Roast (this year it will be Beef Wellington. And yeah... I know the last two are really winter but...:D ) Anyhow the traditonal foods I grew up with like lasagne, Baccala, Ravioli, Braciole, homemade pastas or Gnocci, dried sausage and even fresh Pizza plus the chance to make things that are only made for those special events like Swedish meatballs, Jagerschnitzel, spaetzel, Sweet and sour cabbage, braise short or spare ribs, rissoto, Ettouffe, soups, stews etc, is what makes it exciting and enjoyable. Well I know I haven't said that much about food yet but I will continue to add items as the season progresses. Maybe there are some recipes or ideas you wish to share so have at it. I would love to see what some of ya'll consider your favorite seasons and what foods you like to prepare.

I'm a huge fan of soup. So I like it when it's cool enough to enjoy soup without overheating while eating it. Same for baking bread. Summer is just too hot to bake bread. It makes the house uncomfortable.

But summer is good to for fresh produce, watermelon and long smoked foods on the barbecue. I barbecue in the winter too, but it's not as much fun to hang out by the smoker in the winter.

I enjoy cooking anytime the weather is cool. I love baking and making roasts and such that take a long time. It does seem that I get to "show off" what skills I have more in cool weather than in warm. I'm looking forward to making pumpkin pies (not canned mix pies!) in a month or so and love baking lots of goodies for Christmas!

I love grilling, so Spring and Summer is definately my favorite seasons for cooking. I'm not sure why, but i like the hectic-ness of running back and forth between the grill and whatever i've got going on the stove. I'm married but my wife isnt that great of a cook and besides, i know how i like things done.

anyhoo..:chef:

I love to make soup too, and I will cook or eat it any time of the year- even in 90 degree heat. Some of my favorite nostaligic dishes are braised, so winter would be my favorite time of year to cook.

Just wanted to add that I made a large pot of beef vegetable soup yesterday. It was so good to have a warming food like that again after all the warm weather foods all summer.

Does bacon count?

Ah, bacon! One of those great year-round foods. :lips:

I vote for fall, because that's when the last of the summer produce is still with us, but the temperatures are falling enough to beg for braises and soups and stews.

Then again, in summer it takes ingenuity to produce tempting dishes when it's so hot. And there's nothing so wonderful as tomatoes and corn and peaches in season.

OTOH, spring has its seasonal items -- asparagus, shad and roe, fiddleheads -- that make it special.

And winter is when the house smells best, since the closed windows keep in all those lovely cooking smells.

So, which is my favorite season? All of them. :bounce:

Mmmmm... I like this thread.

At the present, I am rounding up the last of the tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, herbs and grapes and making sauces and soups etc to freeze. I love the feel of the fall harvest and the variety of aromas from the kitchen that permeate the house and mingle with the first wood fires burning....
