Introducing ME :) Need help w/choc. chips

Hi all,
I'm a wife, a mother, and I work in the healthcare field. I'm not a professional cook by any means! (My husband, on the other hand, is awesome at cooking and does a lot of it!)
The reason I found this forum is that I was searching the internet to find out if chocolate chips can go bad!!
I've had a 12 oz pkg of Nestle's Chocolate Morsels in my freezer for a few months. I went to get it to make some fudge for christmas and it was blown up like a balloon!! Have the chips gone bad? The pkg has never been opened.
I was quite shocked, I never thought choc. chips could go bad... can they??
Thanks, Meenie

Welcome to Chef Talk, Meenie! Nice to meet you.

I'm moving your post to the Pastry and Baking General Forum so it'll get the attention it deserves.

Actually according to my contact at Nestle you shouldn't store them in the freezer at all because "moisture is the enemy of chocolate". She is a little weird, that's a direct quote. The best place to store them is in a cool dry cupboard or drawer.

What she recommends is to let them defrost in the refrigerator for a day or so to prevent "blooming" (where the cocoa separates from the other ingredients in the chip this is characterized by a cloudy film on the chips) and sweating which can effect the efficacy of the chips in your recipe. She says the bags usually swell when the chips are stored in the freezer, nothing to worry about, and so long as the chips aren't way past their "Best By" date you are good.

Thanks so much!

Thank you for finding that answer for me. I thought I had some kind of raging botulism or something :)
I did go to the Nestle website but couldn't find anywhere to get a quick answer. I did send them an email, but the reply said I would get an answer in 5-10 days :)
