Arame

Has anyone ever cooked with Arame? My friend gave me a rather large package and I look forward to playing with it, however I would like some input with its usage. Basically I'd like to learn things the easy way this time.

I thought about using it in soups and stir frys, but those are the obvious uses for a product like arame. Anyone have any creative suggestions?

I must admit that I have never heard of arame and had to do a quick check in Google to see what it was.

I had a quick look to see what recipes were floating around the net and like you already mention they are mostly for salads and stirfrys. I found this one though which looked at little different - an Open Faced Arame Sandwich.

I've made a nice salad with arame.

Slice carrots thinly on the diagonal and put them in a saute pan with a little water to steam. While carrots steam. soak the arame in warm water to soften. When carrots are as tender as you'd like them, drain the water and add in some arame, rice vinegar, and a little tamari. Remove from heat and toss.

Simple and healthy.

When I Googled arame and looked at the images, spools of wire came up along with the seaweed. It's easy to see why the name was used!

Thanks for the ideas guys. Tonight I'm going to make it as simple as possible and use lentil's idea but give it a little kick on my own. I'm sauteeing all the ingredients, which include lentil's plus some purple cabbage, in a sweet and tangy teriyaki sauce, with the addition of sesame seeds and a little bit of love. That's going to get me started; later on I'll do some more with it.

I quite like seaweed and I think I have tried this in sushi in the past. I am sure there are lots of different versions so I could be wrong.

Arame is fine strands- someone mentioned that it looks like wire. I can't even get hijiki to my mouth. It looks like worms once it's rehydrated. :eek:
