Nicko,

What exactly is a monkey dish? I've never heard that term before.

Thanks

A monkey dish is a small dish that vegetables or condiments are served in. I've never heard the term used outside of restaurants.

I've heard of monkey bread but never a monkey dish. I'd like to know too.

Monkey dishes

Recently I received an email that asked ChefTalk the question of "Where do monkey dishes get their name". I have absolutely no idea. Can anyone help me out?

are you talking about those dishes that are round with a small half moon handle on each side, perhaps its the shape?.

Take two monkey dishes and place them facing out over your ears, you will resemble a monkey. Hence the name.

Just a thought.

So we still don't know where the name came from? I like the idea of putting two side dish holders to your head and it resembles a monkey.

They're the only things that fit through the bars on monkey cages?

Bump. :D I can't believe I've bumped such an old thread!

Monkey dish is the dish the organ grinder's monkey held out.
