What national or west coast brand of sugar free root beer to you like or find acceptable. I've been jonesing for a root beer float for a few days but I generally don't drink the stuff and was hoping there might be some consensus here. Thanks!

A&W is my favorite. It has marked vanilla flavor but also plenty of spices. My favorite sugar free (or low sugar, really) root beer float includes Edy's Sugar Free vanilla ice cream (not the French vanilla though). I don't like the "slow churned" stuff; too full of air.

In root beer, I don't think there's a sugar-free version that tastes right. Same for ginger ale, grape and orange soda. But I prefer sugar-free in colas and lemon lime.

That's what I'm really looking to make, is a root beer float. Edy's is an East Coast brand of ice cream, but it's the same as Dryer's out here. Funny thing is, years ago there used to be an Edy's ice cream parlor in Berkeley.

What I'd like to find next is a good sugar-free ice cream, straight vanilla for the float, and other flavors for general enjoyment. The sugar-free ice creams I've tried are awful - they all have some sort of chemical taste to them. Maybe it's the sugar substitute they use. Plus, they've all been low fat or non fat. I'd love to find a full-fat sugar-free ice cream that tastes good.

Shel, I know how hard you try to eat healthy, but as Zorba said, "Everyone needs a little madness to cut the bond and be free". Treat yourself on occasion, and unless there's a very real health reason, buy a pint of your favorite ice cream and a liter of your favorite root beer and indulge. Life is too short (and maybe that's the whole issue) not to indulge on occasion. And, in case it matters, my favorite root beer is AW followed by Barq's. Enjoy the float!

Thanks for the sage advice. I blow the doors off frequently. Ribs at my favorite local BBQ joint, for example, eating out evry now and then, and not at veggie-organic restaurants, a Burger King Whopper every now and then. The thing is, with something like soda & ice cream, the total amount of sugar and, I suppose, the way it's assimilated, makes me feel bad afterwards. So, for me, there's no point in drinking a sugary soda pop or eating a heavily sugared ice cream. I'd much rather knock back a big plate of ribs (short end, please) or head down to one of my favorite Chinese restaurants and grab a plate of sesame chicken made extra hot and spicy, head over to one of our great local bakeries and get a treat that doesn't make me feel so bad afterwards, or drop by Chez Panisse and hit the cafe upstairs for something both decadent, delicious, and almost good for me.

I hear you, and maybe my problem is I follow Zorba's advice a bit too often! My latest craving - - the past few weeks at least (and so far I've been able to ignore it) is for a soft serve cone covered with cherry topping. Do you have Dairy Queen's out there? Sad thing, it's not even real ice cream and certainly not frozen custard. I'm not a big fan of sugar-free soda with the exception of Diet Dr. Pepper served ice cold. A few drops of bitters cuts the aftertaste of the diet sodas I've tried. Guess I'd rather go with unsweetened ice tea with lemon than diet soda.

Have you planted your garden yet - - you were asking about container planting a bit ago, weren't you?

There may be some dairy queens around, but none close by that I can recall seeing (OK, just did a Google search - closest one is about 15 miles east of mi casa). I don't pay attention to that sort of treat. We have a Foster's Freeze nearby, and once or twice a tear I'll get a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate, eat about half of it, and wonder why I bought it. For a lot of things like that I now get a children's size ... <LOL>

Yes, unsweetened iced tea does it for me. I sometimes make "sun tea" which is rather nice.

No, I didn't get the garden in yet. I had to get rid of some of the junk on the patio, and we had someone come in on saturday to cart it away. The nursery people told me that I'd have no problem getting some of the herbs going even at this time of year. I'm goung to get some that are already in pots and put 'em out on a shelf. That'll do me for now.

TTYL,

Shel
