My Mother-in-Law gave a me a 7" Ginsu Santoku this weekend.

I've used it once and it wasn't terrible, surprise surprise. Not great either. Have to see how it holds its edge and sharpens.

She means well and I wouldn't trade her.

It skated cutting pickles for the potato salad. So it will do two days of light use between sharpenings. Not too good, but that was to be expected.

A Ginsu is nothing more than a fancy hacksaw blade jammed in a cheap injection molded plastic handle.

Because of it's serrated teeth, it will cut through pretty much anything, but the teeth will dull and the thin blade is always wiggly and will squirm all over the place. The teeth leave a lousy surface on most foods (vegies, cheese, meats, etc.) but does do a decent job with pastries and breads--these being fairly light items so it doesn't really matter if the knife wiggles and squirms.

I won a set once as a door prize, I use one for a bread knife and the others are in my garage, use them for prying out putty out of window frames and digging out dandilions....

I've heard those things can even cut through a nail!

And this greatly impressed me the first time I ever heard that when I was around seven years old.

This one is a plain edge. I'm familiar with the standard serration tactic most of these type of blades employ. But this particular Ginsu isn't serrated.
