Fooey! (computer)

My monitor just fritzed. Looks like it's time for a new one. My monitor was a 10 year old 17" CRT. Archaic, yes, but it wouldn't die so I couldn't justify replacing it. It's not technically dead now either. It just made a clicking noise and now everything is hourglass shaped and the desktop stretches beyond the screen. And the controls won't bring it back in shape.

That's dead enough for a new one. And a new one I shall get. I'm eyeing this beast:

Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 206BW Black 20" 2 ms (GTG) DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 800:1 (DCR 3000:1) - Retail

Did you try turning it completely off, unplug it from the wall, wait 10 seconds, replug it in and reboot. Same thing happened to me, and that was all I had to do to get it back right again.

There was also a "degaussing" button, I think I had to push that after the reboot and that is when everything went back to right.

Yes, I tried that. I've been getting some erratic localized shimmies for a about a week with it before this so it's not terribly surprising.

Wow, 10 years is a long time for a monitor. I have the Samsung 225bw 22" LCD widescreen and I totally love it. It makes a huge difference going from a CRT to an LCD and you'll say to yourself "how did I ever live with that clunker?"

I have a Samsung flat screen and LOVE it. It has PIP (picture in picture) and my husband hooked it up to our cable system, so I can keep an eye on CNN or other shows while I'm on the computer. Love it!!!:bounce:

The only drawback is that our DLP HD television is also a Samsung, and occasionally when DH turns off the TV, my monitor grabs the signal and goes dark until I turn it on again.

It's sweet!

And I can do recto/verso page editing again as I could in the days at a Unix job with 21 inch CRTs many moons ago. Hooray!
