olive "cake" I need a recipe please

last night at a new french restaurant we were given a couple of small peices of what seemed like a savoury cake with our bread and butter. It was well studded with mixed black and green olives, a wee bit salty and so delicious. I want to put it on our cheese board.
It definitely wasnt a bread or a batter. Had a fruit boiled fruit cake texture????????????????
I didnt feel able to ask the chef for the recipe. dont know if thats acceptable practice or not... Wouldnt think so.
If anyone has a recipe they can pass on i would be very grateful

I too would love to see that recipe and know what it is called. It sounds very interesting. And, Chefs....how do ou feel about people asking for / giveing out a recipe?

Rule #2: If you don't ask, you don't get. That should be engraved on every little boys' watchfob.

I never hesitate to ask for a recipe. But I don't do it during service---that's a sure-fire way to get refused. If I really like a dish, I'll get back to the chef afterwards with my request. Usually in writing. And with return postage enclosed.

I would say, on average, I'm batting a little better than 50% in terms of provided recipes. And most of the other times I get a note back explaining why he/she doesn't give out recipes.

Thanks Ky...I usually ask them when they come on my show, but asking in writing, might be a pretty elegant, respectful way to go as well. This way the chef will have a tangable note that your enjoyed his creation.

Im new to chef talk. Wish I'd found it years ago it would have saved a lot of frustrating trawling through recipe books

olive bread is faaaabulous

Made a version of olive bread/cake tonight and it is sooo good. Bit of a mix of both recipes. Didnt have any gruyere so subsituted port salut....I know... But it's all i had at a minutes notice. just had to get on and make it!!
HBJUL - Where are you. I figured OR is Oregon?? But i never heard of Bend.. is that short for something. (excuse my ignorance)
I like the idea of a Foodie chat radio show. Be good to hear it but i guess scotlands a bit out of range.

Congrats on the olive cake...I have yet to try it...been so busy here that I have not had time to cook. Than goodness for food events here in town that I attend! Bend is in Oregon, right in the very center of the state. Many people think that Oregon is rainy...well the coast is very much so. The Cascades Mountain range passes through the western 1/3 of the state and those of us on the eastern side are very dry. In fact, Bend is considered "high desert" so we don't get much rain at all. We are the foot of the Cascades (east side) so we do get snowin the winter. You can always google Bend Oregon to see pix of the town. Back to foodie things...I attended a big food event last night where 18 restaurants presented dishes for al to taste. It was fabulous.
