I know you posted this a while ago, but here are some pics of cupcakes that I have done if this helps you to visualize the posibilities..lol
These little sheep where done by myself and my intern for my Vet and they are a copy of something I found in some book they have a coat of icing/frosting or what ever you call it and we placed a colored circle of fondant to decorate them:
And here they are "stuck" together making it look like a "cake" ( the quality of my decorating was not there as I had packed to move my shop and it was a last minute order for a good customer of mine )
This style is very popular for Mom's wanting to take a "cake" to school but there is really no one to serve it or they don't want to carry plastic plates, utencils and napkins and all that jazz. With a Cupcake Cake, you ice the top flat and across after you place all the little cakes on your board ( I always attach a little blob of icing on the bottom of the cupcake to secure it from jiggling) then you can decorate the whole surface.
Then of course there are the ones you make as you've been instructed previously, with your favorite cake recipe! those are so much fun to make because you can go pretty wild, here is my attempt to try a recipe I found for MOJITO cupcakes:
There are many, many versions and ways to decorate them, if you have access to the INTERNET you can do a "IMAGE" search on "CUPCAKES" "DECORATED CUPCAKES" and so forth.
They are NOT intimidating at all and much fun...they are the AMERICAN version of FAIRY CAKES!
