Wedding cookies - What are they exactly?

I have heard a bunch of friends or just other people talk about how yummy "wedding cookies" are, and I am just trying to figure out what they are exactly??? I have asked my friends and looked them up and there are all kinds of recipes that are all quite different from each other! The pictures I've found for wedding cookies all vary from a ball cookie to a flat sugar cookie to an oatmeal cookie, some are frosted with thick frosting while others are rolled in confect. sugar, but is there a specific type of cookie that people are talking about when they say "wedding cookies"? I am not necessarily looking for a recipe (though if you have one you'd like to share I won't turn it away!) but more for at least a general description so I know what these cookies actually are.

Thanks!

You may have had them as a "butterball. " In most cases, they are a butter dough, rolled into a ball, baked and then rolled in powdered sugar while warm.

Then the variations by region, nationality or family heritage. And maybe even religion, as I think they are very common in catholic family weddings, and are probably mandatory at italian family weddings, LOL.

Variations I've seen are differant types of nuts, sometimes the nuts are toasted first. The flavorings can be vanilla, almond, rosewater, orange peel or flora di silca(sp).

If properly made, they almost melt in your mouth. Never roll them tightly, treat the dough as if it is a meatball, gentle and just shape.

Thanks nowIamone! I think I may have had these once at an Italian wedding, if I am remembering the yummy cookies I had right! Even if they weren't what I had, they do sound yummy so I will have to try to make them when I have the time and see what all the fuss is about! :) Thanks for explaining them to me!

I think they're quite similar to kourambiedes, a Greek butter cookie dredged in powdered sugar. I've seen them in crescent and ball shapes. They're rich and really, really worth the calories. :lips:

My husband always laughs when he sees the boxes of "Danish wedding cookies" at the store. He is Danish and lived there until after college, and has never seen one in Denmark.
