New Product Idea - Cooking Aid - Feedback needed please!

Hi Everyone!

I’m completely new to this forum so I hope you don’t think me asking for your help.

I’m a 3rd year Product Design student in at UWIC in Cardiff. I am currently working on my major project for which I have chosen to design a product that helps make it easier and more convenient for people to cook from scratch.

The research I have conducted so far indicates that many people don’t cook from scratch as often as they would like, so I am currently trying to determine what factors are the cause of this and identify a potential market for a product.

It would be great to get some feedback from people like yourselves who take an active interest in cooking.

I would be really grateful if you could fill in the questionnaire below, and any comments, ideas or suggestions on the idea of this new product would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

Martyn

First off, this site probably isn't a good market audience for your product which will give you a negatively skewed result for market interest.

Cooking Questionnaire

1) Sex? Male

2) 35 – 44

3) a) More than once a day

4) a)2-3 times a week

5)No

6) g) I’m happy with the amount I cook from scratch

7) Cookbook Internet

8) Not interested in such a product as I can do all that myself, or have access to other tools that do nutritional analysis when needed. (rarely)

10, see above.

11) I do not want this product so I wouldn't spend anything.

Other considerations. It needs to be able to import recipes from computer (multiple format support for files and computer systems) and scanner with minimal effort from the user or it won't be used. Typing in my own archive would be prohibitive and would be for most users. Users need confidence in the recipes it comes with, such as modules for popular and reliable cookbooks; Joy of Cooking and so forth.

Most of the people here will write and say that they enjoy cooking from scratch. Well, this IS a cooking website where people pride themsleves in cooking and baking from scratch.

In the last 50 years cooking has gone from an almost all-scratch process to a microwave and eat process. The factors are pretty easy to identify:

1) Time. Dual income families and single parent families are the norm now, not the exception, there is very little time to prepare meals from scratch.

2) Lack of training. Many people today do not have the skills or techniques for cooking/baking that their parents or grandparents have/had. "Home economics" classes in Highschool got axed 20 and 30 years ago. The last 3 or 4 generations got weaned off of cooking from scratch and started using prepared stuff.

3) Proliferation of RTU (ready to use) products and convienience products in the supermarket, as well as prepackaged salads, vegetables, etc.

And last but certainly not least

4) Mega, mega, mega advertising on convienience products. Hey, if you see it a hundred times a week on TV, or in glossy magazine adds, sooner or later you're gonna believe it.

You can design all the software you want but there is no substitute for time. You need time to study the recipie and understand the ingredients and techniques involved.

There is no good substitute for leaning over someone's shoulder and watching while that someone takes you through every step, asking you questions and replying to your questions, demonstrating skills and techniqes and supervising your attempts to learn them.

I hope this helps
