Caul Substitute - Any Ideas?

Found an old old recipe for making faggots, and was thinking of giving it a go. Only trouble is, I doubt I can find caul in my local area (I'll try but don't like the odds).

Question: wondering if there's anything that could be substituted?

You basically make your meatball out of chopped meat and offal, bing it with some soaked bread, add onions, herbs, seasoning, then wrap in a square of caul and put onto oven tray, tightly packed together, and cook for 45 mins, mod. hot oven.

Guess I could make them like a mignon with bacon rasher, or leave the caul off entirely and hope they don't disintegrate...any other thoughts?

Thanks

Cheesecloth?

My only idea would be cheesecloth soaked with some kind of fat(duck, bacon etc...) When I make de-boned stuffed birds this technique works very well.

That's an idea thanks :) Have got some pork dripping left from a roast, guess that would do the trick. The cheesecloth wouldn't burn in the oven, do you think?

What about greaseproof (baking) paper greased with the pork drippings?

Or chicken skin?

Only planning to make a few, so could get by with skin from one or two birds I would imagine.

If the cheesecloth is basted it will not burn. The paper will not cling and hold the food as well. Chicken skin I think is too thick and rubbery. The thing about caul is it's fine, thin almost transparent quality.
