tweaking chocolate chip cookies

i'v been working on making my chocolate chip cookies "more adult" in taste. I've switched over to bittersweet chocolate chips and added some expresso powder. They're going in the right direction, but I feel they still need that last bit of umph. Thought about adding a bit of alcohol but I'm having trouble thinking of what would be compatible with chocolate and expresso besides dark rum or an orange liquour.

Y'all have any suggestions for the alcohol? I use equal parts of white and light brown sugar in the cookies if that helps in the thought process.

thanks muchly,

Beth

Add....

Dried cherries (chopped coarsely)
Rum-soaked raisins (or soaked in other liqueur)
Dip or bottom them in dark chocolate
Candied orange peel

Alcohol in the dough isn't going to work as well as an extract.

Mezz has some good ideas. Here are more:

Orange extract
dried cranberries
hazelnuts
toasted coconut
cocoa nibs

I've been battling with finding the right c.c. cookies for some time. Right now I'm super happy with Elizabeth Falkner's CHOCOLATE2 CHIP ESPRESSO COOKIES, from her Demolition Deserts cookbook. Coco, chips, espresso - super cookies.

The other cookie I'm using is, David Leibovitz's, GREAT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES, from his book Great Book of Chocolate. Uses lots of chips and pecans. Not a thin cookie so it holds up well for travel and taste really good! Don't try leaving out the nuts or cut back on the chips. You'll end up with a thin, spread out mess (still tastes great though!).

Good luck and I highly recommend Demolition Deserts.

Thanks for the ideas. I have some dried cherries on hand, so that's what I'll try first. You've also sparked some changes for my oatmeal cookies. They're next to fiddle with after we've become sick of eating chocolate chip cookies. With teens in the house, I wonder if that's possible?
