Tofu--prepared well, it's delicious

I did a search here on tofu, and I didn't find much. I hope this thread isn't redundant.

I love tofu, but it can be one of the blandest things in the world if not prepared well. It can be delicious if the cook knows how to make the most of it. I love it, but it took me a while to learn how to use it.

In the 70's there were a lot of really bad attempts at making food with tofu in the USA. I don't know why it wasn't banned :D (Have you rinsed your tofu today?)

Cook it with flavors that fit it. Use spices that make the most of it! Just like most ingredients, you have to have experience, or at least knowledge, to make it great. I love it.

Do any of you have great tofu recipes? I don't mean where it's a substitute for meat or something else--I mean where tofu shines! I have a few.

My mom and I are on a tofu kick at the moment. We toss them in seasoned flour and bake until crispy. Then we sautee them in onions and canned hatched green chiles. Delicious.

What are some of the ways you prepare tofu?

Have you ever done stuffed tofu pockets?

I like to do a cinnamon chile oil marinated tofu pocket stuffed with spinach, butternut squash, black eyed peas, and coconut that is served with a roasted red pepper caraway sauce.

One of my favorites is an Indian bean curry with tofu. Tofu wasn't an original ingredient, but it works perfectly.

Your dish there sounds wow nice :bounce: I haven't tried anything like that.

I also like to start onions and sweet peppers sizzling in a fry pan, add some garam masala and then slabs of tofu.

Tofu Pot Pie has always been a favorite of mine. Using golden gravy made with nutritional yeast.
Cut tofu into cube size pieces, saute with a little SPIKE, set aside
Par - cook vegetables

Golden Gravy recipe:
  • 1/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes
  • 1 1/2 c water
  • 2 T soy sauce
  • 2 t olive oil
  • 1/8 t white pepper
Place the nutritional yeast flakes and flour in a dry, 1-quart saucepan, and toast them over medium heat, stirring constantly, until they are lightly browned.
Remove the saucepan from the heat.
Gradually whisk in water, soy sauce, and oil until the gravy is very smooth. Add white pepper and continue whisking.

Cook gravy over medium heat, stirring almost constantly with wire whisk, until it is thickened, smooth, and bubbly.

Pour gravy over tofu cubes and veggies pour into pre baked pastry shell..I have made this using a crust and without a crust, either way it is awesome.

I just saw a rerun of "Everybody Loves Raymond" last nite where Marie and Deborah decided to make a healthier Thanksgiving meal and made, are you ready for this, a Tofu turkey molded and sculpted into a traditional turkey shape. Too Funny!

My mother got my niece a Tofurky one year for Thanksgiving as she is a vegetarian. She hated it, (but loved Grandma for the thought)

We love Tofu oin all forms. Dad even made it once, too much work for me. My 16 yr. old son loves Ma Po Dao Fu. (Homestyle!) great contribution to cooking!
