Origins of the term Monkey Dish

Anybody heard stories or what not about the term monkey dish? I was chatting with a fellow "yankee" down here in NC after work one day. We used the term "monkey dish" for that little side dish that is also termed a fruit dish. We discussed how that term is not used down south or at the very least not widely known. Now I am not sure if this is a regional thing or a time thing. Maybe just us "old timers" know it as a monkey dish.

So, that said, anybody know how this dish came to be called as such?

I have always called them a monkey dish, even though I don't know why, I have never seen a monkey eating out of one, and i am from Florida, so it isn't a North/ South thing.
