How do you guys store your recipes?

Just out of curiosity, how do you store your recipes? I'm thinking of purchasing one of those recipe software and build a database of my recipes...

Master Cook 9

Master Cook 9 is a simply amazing program for the $20 you can buy it for at Best Buy. Don't let the price tag fool you- this baby is a gem- I've been using Master Cook for years at the professional level.:chef:

Use One tsp. to store your recipes online

You can use One tsp. to organize all of your recipes online. You can store any recipes from your family, magazines, cookbooks, or other sites and keep them in one place. The benefit is that you always have access to them wherever you have a web browser.

Better yet, you can also view your recipes on One tsp. through a mobile interface that works on most mobile phones (iPhones, Palm Pre, Blackberry, and other smartphones).

I just keep them in a binder. I like to type them out and put them in those plastic page protectors to keep them clean. I use dividers to seperate apps, mains, sauces, baked goods etc.

Mastercook has a "bit of a learning curve", but once you master it, you'll wonder how you survived without it!

One of the few programs I've come across that the "on-line help, F1" is better than any manual!

I have 3 spiral notebooks and a 3x5 cardbox that I used for years. Now it all goes on an external HD as well as my Mac.
Taste: The sensation derived from food, as interpreted thru the tongue to brain sensory system.
Flavor: The overall impression combining taste, odor, mouthfeel and trigeminal perception.

Little black notebook, with alphabetical tabs. Small enough to fit in a shirt pocket or drawer. First one is from '84 -90, second one from 90-98, and the third one 99- current.

I never, ever, ever directly copy recipies from a magazine or any other source without first making it. Usually needs tweaking anyway, and then I have to go and convert from "stupidity" to metric weight anyways

Mostly I keep them in my head.

Like others have mentioned, a little black notebook for specific amounts of ingredients is good to have on you at all times.

And lastly, reading through this post, I just took a look at an application called "A Cook's Books" for mac.
[EDIT] I can't attach a link because I haven't posted at least 5 times, but here is their link: 3caam.com/products.html

I actually like the idea of these applications because you can get reference to nutritional values. Which is a humongous plus, personally.
I'm taking a look at the reference of nutritional values right now and there are over 200 nutritional categories and you can select, and even by amount, it's quite amazing and informative and very useful, in my opinion.

200.3 cups of regular beer (not light etc.) = 122,785.516 kcal of calories
and 17,132.863 mcg of "Folate DFE"! Whatever that stuff is, I don't know. But the information is there! I like it ...

I'm thinking about purchasing, it's not cheap though!

lol, the recipe programs usually have a "stupidity" to "uptight" conversation application:p

The good thing about the kitchen I work in is the head chef asks every week for the cooks and chefs to come up with specials for the week. The head chef wil choose the ones that best suit his criteria that week such as the ingredients in stock, prep times, etc etc.

So I first research the cookbooks, then the internet and so on. I write the ones that I choose into my notebook. If that recipe is chosen and it works well then I laminate it and put in the kitchen specials recipe folder for use again.

Its a good system and the thing I like about the most is that it gets everyone thinking about menu creation and considering things that in season, in stock and even in fashion. It's a good learning tool.

I use Mastercook 7 (haven't upgraded to 9 yet though I am thinking about it). Between culinary school and all the restaurants I have worked at, I have plenty of 3-ring binders. Problem with those though is trying to find recipes I need. Now, with Mastercook, I can use the search function to find recipes that I need.

BTW, anyone using Mastercook 9 and Microsoft Vista? I heard there are issues with compatability. Anyone with any insight into that?

Mastercook works with Vista as long as you disable the UAC (User Account Control) or follow: MasterCook and Vista

I've just been using Excel since I do Banquets often. I can set it up so I can punch in how many people I have and it multiplies it out for me. Not exact but, I know how much I need (roughly) of everything.

All of my bakery items recipes are printed out in Excel as well and stored in a plastic box in protectors.
