Substitute for Cranberries

I've been working on a sauce to go over tomatoes and warm goat cheese. At the suggestion of a friend, I added dried cranberries to some red onions sauteed in neutral oil with s nice splash of good balsamic, cook it down a bit so its thick and sort of syrupy.

It worked out pretty well, although I'm not crazy about dried cranberries. Maybe I could use less of the berries, but, instead, what might be a good substitution considering the other ingredients?

Fresh cranberries, instead of dried?
I use a lot of redcurrants in sauces during the Autumn when cooking venison and duck.

If dried fruit is what you are looking for to substitute the dried cranberries, my initial reaction would be dried cherries. But then again, I am uber partial to dried cherries as a snack.

Apples might go with the goat cheese and onion, but I don’t see them complimenting the tomato. I would think the same would be true of raisins or currants. However, I must admit that I am not a fan of raisins at all.

You might enjoy dried apricots in this recipe. Nice color, subtle taste.

For a fruit I agree with Izbnso: dried cherries. But to really sub they have to be dried sour cherries, because cranberries bring that tartness to the table.

For a nonfruit, try tamarind paste. Well, that is a fruit, I reckon. But you know what I mean.

I don't think I worded my post very well, I was asking whether the OP should use a fresh source, rather than dried fruits.

Redcurrants - I have lots of berries growing in my garden, including white currants, redcurrants and blackcurrants - I have never used any of the above berries in a dried version. I make lots of jams and use redcurrant jelly to make traditional accompaniment to game such as Cumberland sauce.

i know this might sound like a weird combo, but mango goes fantastically with tomatoes...a mango vinaigrette perhaps, or a citrus vinaigrette even..i i use to live/work(cook) in the caribbean for quite a few years and mango and tomato combos(salads with fresh basil, chives) were used often.also remember a baked tomato dish filled with a filled with a goat cheese and tropical pesto mix..macadamia nuts, jalapeno, garlic and cilantro...good stuff..also like ky's suggestion of tamarind paste..that would make a lovely vinaigrette..
