Lemon Cheese Cake

Years ago, I had an old community cookbook that had a recipe for a Lemon Cheese Cake. This was not a "cheesecake" but more similar to a pound cake. There was no kind of cheese in it at all, even cream cheese and I never understood the name of it. In the passing years, I lost the cookbook in a move and have never seen another recipe like it. No cake mix, pudding, or anything like that was involved. The ingredients were simple (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, etc.)and things that I almost always had in the house, with the exception of fresh lemon juice but I usually had some of the bottled stuff. I've been trying to locate a similar recipe to make it again.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've looked online but none I've found ring any bells with me.

Allie,

I think I know what you mean, and scribbled up a recipe for you. It's at http://www.cheftalk.com/forums/recip...tml#post238973

It seemed like a good idea to start a new thread to better share the recipe, and catch some extra feedback as well.

Hope this helps,
BDL

There is a kind of custard pie called chess that is a a term derived from cheese but contains no cheese. The chess refers to curd. This doesn't sound like your recipe really, but it might help you figure out the name.

Thanks BDL. I looked over your recipe and there are some differences but not major. My recipe didn't call for lemon zest.....good thing because at that point in my life, I did not have a clue how to zest a lemon. lol It also didn't call for rum. Again, that's a good thing for that point in my life because I would not ever have dreamed of buying alcoholic beverages for any reason. My recipe did not have you poking holes and pouring anythin over it. The cake stood alone with nothing to embellish it. The recipe was very, very simple. I started making it when first married at 18 and continued making it until I moved to Indiana and lost the cookbook. Some 12-13 year old neighbor girls were introduced to actually cooking from scratch, not a box, by this one recipe! They'd come to my home every other week or so and we'd make this cake.

Hard to believe, that time in my life, was only about 10 years ago. How far I've come in my culinary skills and tastes. lol As soon as I get some rum.....have vodka of several types and bourbon but no rum, I'll give this recipe a go and see how it compares. Thanks!!

Phatch, I have never had a chess pie......at least not that I can recall. I've seen recipes for them when I was looking for "chess cake". I had a cousin who always made chess cakes for family reunions when I was a child. I loved that stuff and she is the only one who ever made it. I don't see her anymore and have no contact info so couldn't get her recipe. Then I stumbled on Paula Deen's "Southern Gooey Cake" recipe one day and it tasted exactly like my cousin's version. My family loves it but I don't make it very often. Once or twice a year is plenty for me to get my fix. lol
