milk sell-by dates

I moved up to the Northwest a little over a year ago and am seeing something I never saw in Los Angeles. The sell-by dates on milk are usually 3 weeks to over a month away! In L.A., I was lucky if I found a carton of 2% milk that had a date 7 days out. When you go to open the Northwest milk, the area where the spout is says that the milk is good for 15 days after opening. This is another thing I've never seen before. The date on the cartons in L.A. was the only date (and that wasn't always so reliable  )
Can anyone explain this to me?

Where these perhaps the Lactaid type milk product? They DO have a long sell by date (I use these alot being lactose intolerant). They may have a long sell by date due to being super "past your eyes'd"

That being said, it may be just the product in that particular area uses a different type of pasteurization process than ewe are used to. Many reasons for it...I always rely on the words of Tucan Sam..."Just follow your nose....it always knows" If it smells ok, taste a bit...if it taste ok...go for it. If in doubt...toss it out.

In the words of one of our regulars here....IMNAC....
"but I've seen one played on TV."

individual state laws on sell by dates. when i was doing dairy sales a few yrs. back, new york codes were for 1 week vs. mass. codes which were 2 weeks on the same product.

I find it strange also.

I also see that organic milk like Horizons stays fresh for up to a month in my refrigerator while regular old grocery store milk expires in 4-5 days after I buy it. Why???

The 'sell-by' date and the 'best if used by' date are both stamped on the milk in my state. Usually, the 'best if used by date' is about 3 weeks from the final sale date. I have been hearing a good deal about 'ultra-pasturization' lately, which is supposed to be some super-process that extends the shelf life of dairy products. What I haven't been able to determine is if this affects the nutritional value of the products in some way?
