Nerd Talk: Linux (ubuntu) hooray

For the past few revisions of ubuntu, I have had no success in getting my network to work. All the suggested tweaks and settings availeth not for my motherboard's networking.

The network failed in Feisty Fawn, worked well in Gutsy Gibbon, failed again in Hardy Heron, and failed last night when I tried out Intrepid Ibex. But today, my google-fu paid off and I found suggestions for a BIOS update that may fix this problem.

BIOS updates aren't usually difficult, but there is some level of risk to the computer. And the alleged automated tool for my system also failed, probably because my motherboard is now passe and not in production. And Asus's internet support pages are notoriously user unfriendly. So I got to do it manually.

But it worked and my PC now happily boots and fully runs linux again along with XP and Vista.

Hooray!

Have you ever played with Mepis? I have it as dual boot on one of my systems and it has been pretty good with older hardware. And yes I am a techno nerd

The motherboard is an Asus Striker Extreme so it's not that out of date, but the automated FTP sites weren't working for the auto BIOS update.
