Hi,
I was recently made aware of the plight of the cheetahs - their diminishing numbers have had them on the Endangered Species list for quite some time. There are only about 12,000 cheetahs left in the world, in small pockets in Africa and, surprisingly, a few in Iran. At one time cheetahs roamed North America and much of the mid-east, the Mediterranean, and Africa.
Their lack of genetic diversity (caused by them almost becoming extinct during the last great ice age) has caused much inbreeding resulting in many cheetahs dying of genetic defects and poor reproduction due to low sperm counts and poor quality sperm. Most all cheetahs today are related.
I urge you to get to know more about these wonderful cats at the Cheetah Conservation Fund web site, Cheetah Conservation Fund, and if you can, to make a donation to support the fund and the cheetahs, or perhaps to buy a gift that will help support these great cats. The cheetah has been around longer than lions and leopards, yet they are in the gravest danger. Please help in some way, even if it's only to spread the word about their circumstances. If nothing else, take a little time from your busy schedules and at least learn a little about these remarkable cats.
I've made an affordable contribution to sponsor a cheetah, and am planning to do some of my holiday shopping through the CCF web site. Perhaps you can do the same.
Kind regards,
Lance
