Army icing or frosting

use cocoa for the dirt, green sanding sugar for the grassy areas, blue sanding sugar for water. you can buy the green/blue sugar generally at craft stores. i've been able to do it by mixing sugar with paste colors. and a cheap bag of army men for decoration. i've made similar cakes for marine corps functions, they were always a big hit.

If the cake is chocolate save the trimmings and toast them. Grind them up and you can use that for dirt as well, tastes better than cocoa powder. You can buy the colors at stores like Michaels, they are called garden colors.

Brown sugar would work nicely for sand.

You cant go wrong with army men.
