Probably a stupid question...

Hi everyone,

I am very new to forums and have not done much posting. I have questions about some of the miscellaneous options:

1) What are trackbacks and what do they do?
2) What does "automatically parse links in text" mean?
3) What does "automatically retrieve titles from external links" mean?

I'm sorry if these are basic things I should know. Like I said I don't have much experience with posting and I don't want to do a lot of posting until I know what to do for those sections. Thanks to anyone who can answer these questions.

Trackbacks are mostly a blog thing. They allow you to know when other people link into your blog. You have to approve their use. Each user account here can set up a topical blog.

The parse links is to turn a standard URL into a link without using the formatting codes. This is handy for most posters.

The retrieve titles bit means that when you post a link, readers don't see the URL. Rather they see the linked pages title formatted as a hyperlink they can click. Often the title is unclear or longer than the URL so I have mixed feelings about using this. However, it's set by default and I've never bothered to uncheck it.

Thank you for replying to my questions. I actually googled the questions but didn't quite understand what they were saying. Your reply was a lot easier to understand.

so never feel ashamed to ask any question if its the first time for you.

No one came from his/her mother's womb with everything already fed into their brain's memory...lol

Nice that you asked...would serve as help to others who are new...

Internet may grow old, but there will always be people who will be new to it.
